Honoring Our Roots, Healing Our Hearts

October is Hispanic Heritage Month—a time to honor the vibrant traditions, resilience, and contributions of Hispanic communities. This year, campaigns like Nuestra Herencia Sana: Our Nurses Son Bravas y Bravos remind us of the powerful role caregivers play in healing and uniting us. As an artist, I see a beautiful parallel: art, like nursing, is a force for healing, connection, and cultural pride.

Art as Healing: More Than Just a Creative Outlet

Art has long been recognized for its healing power. Studies show that creative activities—like coloring, painting, or drawing—can reduce stress, ease anxiety, and even help us process difficult emotions.
Whether you’re a nurse, a patient, or simply someone seeking a moment of peace, art offers a safe space for expression and self-care.

The Nuestra Herencia Sana initiative celebrates Hispanic nurses—our “bravas y bravos”—as pillars of community health. This year, I was deeply honored that my artwork was chosen as the official poster for the campaign, symbolizing unity, healing, and cultural pride.
As Gaby, one of the campaign organizers, shared:
“Annie, your poster captures the heart of our community—its resilience, warmth, and the healing power that art brings to our journey. It’s more than an image; it’s a celebration of who we are and what brings us together.”
Being part of this project reminded me how art can bring people together. Whether it’s through a poster, a mural, or a coloring book, creative expression has the power to unite us, spark conversations, and foster collective healing. These shared experiences remind us that healing isn’t just individual—it’s communal.

Art, Heritage, and Identity

For many Hispanic artists (myself included), creative expression is deeply intertwined with cultural heritage. Through whimsical illustrations, vibrant colors, and storytelling, we celebrate our roots and honor the stories of those who came before us.
Art becomes a bridge—connecting us to our ancestors, our communities, and our own hearts.
